You hear more. You notice more. You wake up already in the landscape.
There is something about sleeping under canvas that changes the way you experience safari.
You hear more. You notice more. You wake up already in the landscape.
A few days before you arrive, there may have been nothing on that patch of ground at all.
Then the crew comes in, the tents go up, beds are made, the kitchen starts cooking and, for a little while, it becomes home. Later, it all comes down again.
That temporary nature is a big part of what we love about mobile camping. There is a lightness to it. You are sleeping on the land rather than in a permanent building, with canvas between you and whatever is happening outside.
And you really do hear everything. Lions calling in the night. Hyenas carrying on somewhere beyond camp. The occasional unmistakable sound of elephants nearby. By breakfast, everyone usually has a slightly different version of what they heard.
It is not about roughing it. There are proper beds, lovely linen, a steaming hot shower and very good food. The difference is that none of it competes with the reason you came. The landscape still feels like the most important thing around you.
A Long Tradition of Travelling This Way
Mobile camping has been part of Ker & Downey’s safari tradition for decades. The tents and the level of comfort have evolved enormously, but the basic idea has stayed wonderfully simple: choose a beautiful place, set up camp for a while and let the wilderness shape the experience.
That history is part of our own connection to mobile safari. Finlay is a Ker & Downey partner and private guide, and through that relationship we work with campsites, equipment and teams that have been built up over many years.
Then we make the journey feel like Everwild.
Finlay privately guides whenever possible, so the same person stays with you through the journey and gets to know how your group likes to travel. Hannah runs and hosts the camp, working closely with the crew on the food, atmosphere and the small details that make it feel relaxed and personal.
The aim is not to make camp feel like a hotel transported into the bush. Quite the opposite. A beautiful table, a comfortable bed, good food, a hot shower, and then let the place itself do the rest.
Life in Camp
Some of the nicest moments are very ordinary ones.
Coffee brought to your tent while the bush is waking up. Breakfast under a tree after a morning out. Lunch in the shade. A book after lunch. Children wandering into the kitchen to see what is being made. A steaming shower before sundowners.
The whole day can move around you.
If the children are awake and hungry early, breakfast can happen early. If you find something extraordinary and everyone wants to stay, you stay. If the afternoon calls for a slower pace, there is no need to rush out again simply because somebody else’s schedule says so.
That freedom is one of the pleasures of having your own camp and private guide.
It also means sightings can unfold naturally. Finlay may notice tracks, a herd behaving differently, or some small detail that makes it worth stopping. Sometimes nothing happens for twenty minutes. Then suddenly everything does.
Those are often the moments people remember.
One Chapter, Or the Whole Journey
A mobile camp does not have to be the whole safari.
For some guests, a few nights under canvas are the perfect addition to a wider journey. You might begin in a lodge or private house, spend several nights in camp, and then move on somewhere completely different.
Other safaris are designed around two or three mobile locations. While the crew takes the camp down and moves it ahead, you spend two or three nights in a private house or lodge before rejoining them in another landscape.
We love that rhythm.
The private house gives you space, a pool, perhaps a slower couple of days. Then you return to camp and that feeling of being right in the wilderness comes back again.
The contrast makes both experiences better.
Perhaps that is why mobile camping has endured. It is comfortable without feeling overdone, adventurous without being hard work, and temporary in a way that keeps you very aware of where you are.
You have travelled all that way to be in the wilderness. Mobile camping simply puts you a little closer to it.
Private Expedition in Safari Golden Season: Mobile Camping Closer to the Land
10-20 September
Designed for the group for up to 12 people
Three very different sides of Kenya.
Finlay guides the expedition from beginning to end, getting to know the group as the journey unfolds.
The result is three completely different experiences: the scale and drama of the Great Migration, the wildness and cultural richness of northern Kenya, and finally the freedom of a private house on Borana Conservancy.
We fly privately between the three regions, allowing us to move directly between very different parts of Kenya without shaping the expedition around airline schedules
10–13 September: Maasai Mara | Great Migration & Luxury Mobile Camp
13–16 September: Northern Kenya | Samburu Culture & Kalepo Camp
16–20 September: Borana Conservancy | Lengishu Private House
This September we’ll host one private expedition for a group of up to 12 guests on this journey.
Investment: USD 24,500 per person (based on 12 guests).
*Vary for smaller private groups. Please contact us for a tailored quotation.
September offers the final opportunity this year to experience the Great Migration in the Maasai Mara before the herds gradually begin their journey south again.
We take on a limited number of private safaris each year, allowing us to give every journey our full attention. So, only one spot is open for this September.
Trips like this rarely happen because everyone’s diary suddenly clears. Usually, one person decides to start the conversation.
Perhaps that person is you.
